Getting To Know You: Q&A with Celebrity Stylist Sam Desalu
-
Good day ladies and maybe some gents, Chuck here again bringing you another post about men’s fashion. This time around I was fortunate enough to interview a good friend of mine, Sam Desalu. I wanted to get a male Stylist point of view on fashion and an outlook on trends in 2012. Sam hails from Chicago by way of Nigeria and is an awesome Wardrobe Stylist/Image Consultant. He has styled celebrities ranging from Ginuwine to Tyrese to Selita Ebanks and has shown no signs of slowing down anytime soon.
So without further ado, meet Sam:
Chuck: Who are some of your favorite designers/brands?
Sam: Ralph Lauren, Tommy Hilfiger, G-Star and Alexander WangC: When it comes to suits, what names do you suggest for men?
S: Zara, Ralph Lauren, Calvin Klein, Bottega Veneta, Hugo Boss and Tom Ford are my go-to.C: As far as men’s fashion trends in 2012, what direction do you see trends going?
S: Definitely prints, guys wearing more prints such as animal prints. Bold colors and blazers with a boxier definition.C: How was your style changed over the past 5 years?
S: Over the last 5 years my style has evolved from the kid with the baggy jeans and over sized t-shirts to the man with the fitted blazer, fitted slacks/jeans and dress shoes. Moving to New York definitely influenced my style as it is today.C: What boutiques do you suggest for men in Chicago?
S: Vivid Braille, Leaders 1354, RSVP, Sir and Madame and Akin always offer the best of the best, in my opinion.C: On to your career, how was your experience in New York?
S: I went through a lot for a while in the beginning, was dead broke, but meeting people and networking got me to where I am.C: How did working at BET come about?
S: I knew someone that interned there and they introduced me to some people. I worked under Texanna Watts and Mike B. styling Chris Brown, Alicia Keys and other celebrities and my first client was Ginuwine. A lot of my experience came from Texanna and Mike.C: What led to your decision to return to Chicago?
S: Chicago is a great medium between LA and NY. I am able to create opportunity and a name for myself here.C: What are your plans for your company Forefront Image Consulting?
S: I want to help my clients cultivate and maintain better images and I want to take Forefront to the next level and be recognized as a well-respected company.C: Where do you see your styling going in 2012?
S: Definitely big things. Forefront Image Consulting will take off and because 2011 was a big year for me, 2012 is gonna be even better.
